Organized crime police cooperated with criminals

December 12th, 2007 issue

(Updated Dec. 13, 2007) Two detectives accused of cooperating with an organized crime ring for two years have been convicted and sentenced to jail terms of up to 13 years, according to Czech media reports.

Josef Opava and Petr Koňařík both used to work for the organized crime section of the Prague police force. The duo were convicted of assisting members of the “David Berdych Gang”, which is being investigated for a series of muggings and robberies in Central Bohemia between 1999 and 2001.

The two men were charged with giving gang members confidential information from police records and helping them avoid convictions in exchange for 30 percent of the proceeds from every crime that was committed.

Close to 20 members of the gang have already been convicted by the Central Czech Regional Court.
