Population boom is fueled by immigrants

More than 62,000 newcomers came in first part of 2007

(Updated Dec. 13, 2007) The number of people living in the Czech Republic has hit a new high, Novinky.cz reported.

In the first nine months of 2007, their ranks increased by 62,200 to 10,349,372 – the highest number since the end of the 1980s, according to the Czech Statistical Office survey. Immigrants accounted for 52,400 of the total, according to the survey.

The number of marriages also rose, partly on the "lucky day" of July 7, 2007, when a record number of 4,400 couples were married.
