Poll: Voters like KlausSome 28 percent prefer ŠvejnarDecember 5th, 2007 issue (Updated Dec. 10, 2007) Almost half of Czech opposition voters would vote for Vaclav Klaus as president, according to a Median poll commissioned by Mlada fronta Dnes newspaper. In a direct election, 43 percent of voters think Klaus should be president, while 28 percent prefer economist Jan Švejnar. The rest of the respondents don't like either candidate. Even the communist party would prefer Klaus to Švejnar, the poll showed. (Editor's note: Public opinion polls in this case only play an indirect role, as Czech presidents are elected by the parliament.) Švejnar's main problem is that he is relatively unknown, compared to Klaus, according to the survey. This may be one reason why Klaus refused to engage in a televise debate with Švejnar this weekend, MfD wrote. "When I have 281 electors on my side, I will not engage in television debate. It would be counterproductive," Klaus told MfD. The poll also showed that women and university students prefer Klaus, whereas adults with a university education tend to prefer Švejnar.
