(Updated Dec. 11, 2007) Prague police are investigating Green Party Chairman Martin Bursík on suspicion of tax evasion, according to Czech media reports.
An anonymous tipster claims that Bursík and his brother Jiří charged higher rents than they reported in their tax returns in certain buildings administered by Ecoconsulting, a realty company which the two ran before Bursík entered politics.
"At this point it's impossible to say whether a crime was committed at all. We have to investigate all available information and then decide how to proceed," Prague economic crime section chief Jiří Tauber told Aktualne.cz. Tauber declined to say who the informer was.
"There's some mark instead of a signature, so we are treating it as an anonymous accusation," he said.
Bursík denied any wrongdoing.
"I am prepared to let [the police] investigate the fulfillment of all tax obligations and to fully cooperate with the investigation," he said.
Bursík is the biggest opponent of a return to government of KDU-CSL leader Jiří Čunek who was asked to leave the cabinet due to accusations of taking bribes and of accepting social security payments with millions in the bank. The investigation was stopped for unknown reasons in November.
