Former Čunek secretary sues Czech justices, police

Case is at the International Court of Human Rights

December 5th, 2007 issue

(Updated Dec. 18, 2007) A former secretary of Jiří Čunek,  who accused the KDU-CSL party leader of accepting bribes when he was mayor of Vsetín, is suing Czech justice and police organizations at the International Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, Právo reports.

Marcela Urbanová, Čunek's former secretary, told the police that Čunek had taken a half-million crown bribe in 2002 while serving as mayor of the town of Vsetín. The investigation was stopped last month for lack of evidence.

She filed a complaint with the Czech Constitutional Court in August, claiming that her rights had been violated during the investigation. When her suit was rejected, she decided to appeal to the International Court in Strasbourg.

"She claims her right to a fair trial before a court of the proper instance and her right to privacy have been violated. She also claims [the investigators] violated the prohibition against inhumane and degrading treatment," said her attorney, Klára Veselá-Samková.

Urbanová wants compensation of 10,000 euro and reimbursement of Czech and Strasbourg court costs.
