Czech-German border town blocks road with a boulder

City officials have no funds to pave the main street

December 5th, 2007 issue

(Updated Dec. 18, 2007) Inhabitants of the village of Krompach, located on the Czech-German border near Česká pa, have put a huge boulder in the middle of their main street to stop cars driving over the border from Germany, Lidové noviny reports.

Czech officials expect to open all of the country's borders on Friday, including those to Germany, when Europe's Schengen Agreement goes into effect.

The situation in Krompach is awkward in that the road on the German side has been newly-paved up to the border in preparation for a Dec. 21 opening. The road is part of a highway running from Portugal to Estonia.

According to Krompach Mayor Václav Hron, the municipality does not have the funds to pave the road on its side of the border – that's why officials have rolled the boulder onto the road.
