RANGERS The New York Rangers hockey team, led by Czech star Jaromír Jágr, is likely to open its National Hockey League campaign next season in Prague with two games against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the New York Daily News reported Nov. 19. Representatives of the Česká sportovní marketing agency, which is leading the push for the game, refused to confirm the report.

QUALIFIED The national soccer team ended its Euro 2008 qualification campaign with a 2–0 win over Cyprus in Nicosia, Cyprus, Nov. 21. The Czechs won their six-member round robin group and qualified for the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer.
CLASH Following their games in the Euro 2008 qualification, the national soccer team will once again clash with rival Slovakia in the 2010 World Cup qualification, according to the Nov. 25 draw in Durban, South Africa. The other opponents of the Czech team in the World Cup qualifiers will be Poland, Northern Ireland, Slovenia and San Marino.
OLYMPICS President Václav Klaus has questioned Prague City Hall’s bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in the capital. Klaus said during his Nov. 26 meeting with Brno Town Hall representatives that the Olympics would hardly bring profit to the whole country. Klaus also pointed to the increasing number of Olympic sports and said that some stadiums would hardly be used after the games.
HEADHUNTING Twenty-year-old Martin Fenin, a striker on the national soccer team, has been eyed by Italy’s Juventus, said Pavel Zíka, Fenin’s agent. Zíka said the transfer should be completed over the Gambrinus liga’s winter break. Fenin, who plays with Teplice, earned recognition last summer when he scored the only goal in the Czech team’s 2–1 loss to Argentina in the final of the Under-20 World Cup.
SLALOM The current world champion in the women’s slalom, Šárka Záhrobská, finished second in a World Cup slalom competition in Panorama, Canada. It was only the fourth finish on the World Cup podium for Záhrobská.
X-COUNTRY Similar to Záhrobská, the cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer also began his season in impressive fashion. Bauer finished second in the men’s 15-kilometer freestyle race in a World Cup event in Beitostölen, Norway.
SKI JUMP
The winner of the 2005–06 World Cup ski jump season, Jakub Janda, has failed to qualify for the Czech Republic’s early World Cup races this season. Janda will still have a chance to qualify for the World Cup team later in the season.
VOLLEYBALL In spring 2009, Prague’s Sazka Arena will host the Champions League’s Final Four tournament — the most prestigious club event in European men’s volleyball. European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) chairman André Myer handed the assignment to the Czech Volleyball Union’s chairman Antonín Lébl Nov. 22.
