When the managers of Art Hotel in Prague 7 were designing the building’s interior, they wanted something unusual and luxurious, something that couldn’t be found just anywhere in the city. As its name implies, Art Hotel is heavy on visuals, and details count. Too often, says general manager Kateřina Kotíková, hoteliers spend so much money on construction that they scrimp on things like carpets and wallpaper. But she sees interiors as the most important element of a hotel. That’s why Kotíková went to Nobis Studio.
“We chose it because they were the best on the market when we wanted to open the hotel, and they had lots of really nice materials that you can’t find anywhere else, maybe only in Paris,” Kotíková says.
Located just off Wenceslas Square, Nobis Studio opened in 2002 and has since decorated some of the top hotels in the Czech Republic, including the five-star Riverside Hotel in Prague and the equally prestigious Hotel Carlsbad Plaza in Karlovy Vary, to name a few.
Hotels are the majority of Nobis’ clients, according to Nobis spokeswoman Alison Pollitt, but the studio works with private clients as well.
Kotíková says that Art Hotel was completely designed by Nobis — from the towels to the lights — save for the furniture. But the studio does work in furniture and offers an extensive list of services. Pollitt says this includes “everything from developing the design concept, interior architecture and planning, building, electrical, carpentry and decorating services … the making of furniture and soft furnishings and decorations, decorating. Everything a corporate or private client may require for the creation and completion of their interior.”
But clients who don’t want to use the interior design service can choose individual items for their homes at the studio, she says.
And, as Kotíková points out, the studio carries some of Europe’s best material.
“Nobis Studio represents exclusively the premier French textile house Nobilis, as well as Rubelli from Italy, two of the leading decorative textile houses in the world,” their Web site touts. “Nobis Studio also offers a wide selection of textiles, linens, furniture and accessories from other leading houses from across Europe, including England, Austria and Germany.”
As Pollitt puts it: “The range and quality of services and selection of different types of products available sets Nobis apart from not only other furniture stores but also other interior design and decoration companies.”
Despite several requests for an interview, Nobis owner Lenka Kurečková was unable to comment for this article.
Business in the past several years has been brisk, according to Pollitt, and the studio has enjoyed such success that in 2003 the second Nobis Studio store opened at V Kolkovně 4, focusing on accessories, linens and other smaller items for the home, and the Nobis Life store at Žitná 39 was launched last December. “The concept of Nobis Life is concentrated on a more contemporary style,” Pollitt says.
