SLOVAKIA The Czech Republic topped neighboring Slovakia 3–1 in a Euro 2008 qualifier Nov. 17 in Prague. Zdeněk Grygera, Marek Kulič and Tomáš Rosický each scored goals for the team, which had already clinched a berth in next summer’s championship tournament. Germany will join the Czech Republic as the other qualifier from Group D.

BOXER Professional boxer Lukáš Konečný has postponed his fight against WBO world champion Sergei Dzindziruk due to injury. The Ukrainian was set to defend his super welterweight belt against Konečný Nov. 30 in Karlsruhe, Germany. Konečný suffered a rib injury in a training bout Nov. 15, forcing the indefinite postponement.
GOALIE The national hockey team goalie Milan Hnilička has agreed to move from the Extraliga’s Liberec to the Russian team Ufa. Hnilička announced Nov. 12 that he would be playing in Russia on loan from Liberec until the end of this season, when he will return to the north Bohemian club.
WORRIES The International Skiing Federation (FIS) has expressed concern about the government’s interference into the management of the 2009 World Nordic Skiing championship in Liberec. The FIS made the remark during its Nov. 5–6 session. Concerns were sparked by former Sports and Education Minister Dana Kuchtová, who last summer replaced the chairman of the championship’s organizing committee, Roman Kumpošt, with retired skier Kateřina Neumannová.
DENIED The national soccer team’s goalkeeper Petr Čech denied reports in the Spanish media that he was considering a move from England’s Chelsea to Barcelona. Čech said he is satisfied in the London-based club. Čech’s agent, Pavel Zíka, said that should Čech transfer in the future, he would only go to one of the three richest clubs in the world, which includes Barcelona.
SECOND LIFE The Sparta Praha soccer club has become the country’s first sports organization to join Second Life, the 3-D virtual world on the Internet. Second Life is regularly visited by 11 million people worldwide who monthly spend an equivalent of 1 billion Kč ($55 million). Sparta spokesman Jakub Otava said the club decided to join the project for marketing reasons.
HEATED All games in the country’s top soccer division, the Gambrinus liga, will be played on heated turf as of the 2009–10 season, the Czech Soccer Association decided Nov. 14. It is hoped that the heated pitches will help avoid postponing games in February, when frozen pitches often prevent teams from playing.
CANDIDACY In another decision, the Czech Soccer Association announced it would bid to host either the World Under-20 Championship or the European Under-21 Championship in the Czech Republic in 2011. In late October, the Czechs also said they would bid to host the Euro 2020 tournament together with Slovakia.
