Prague wants to reduce psychiatric beds
Mayor has plan to save money with home care

(Updated Nov. 18, 2007) Mayor Pavel Bém wants to reduce the number of beds in psychiatric hospitals in Prague, Czech media reports. The city hopes to save money by getting families to take care of mentally ill patients at home, according to the Aktualne.cz Web site.The mayor says the care provided by psychiatric hospitals in too pricey and not effective, and that it makes patients feel isolated, according to Aktualne. Bém is the crazy one, however, if he thinks it's possible to treat seriously mentally ill people at home, says Ivan David, the director of Prague's Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital. If the proposal is approved, patients will end up on the streets or in jail, David says. One in 10 Prague residents suffers from some form of psychiatric disorder, according to similar story in Mladá fronta Dnes newspaper. An estimated 115,000 patients are registered with a psychiatrist in in Prague, Mladá fronta Dnes reports.
