Up to 5,000 homeless populate Prague

Numbers remain high according to police

November 14th, 2007 issue

Every morning, transients leave homeless shelters located on the outskirts of the city to beg in the streets of downtown Prague, Právo daily newspaper reports.

In the evening, they return to the shelters outside the center. The number of homeless people has stayed steady at about 3,000-5,000 people over the last several years, according to Ludvík Klema, deputy head of city police.

Most of the people are transient, moving from place to place when land owners call the police to get them out, Klema said.
