ARSENAL The Slavia Praha soccer team held the English club Arsenal to a 0–0 tie in a Champions League game Nov. 7 in Prague. It was a redeeming tie for Slavia, which lost to Arsenal 7–0 two weeks earlier in London.UEFA The two Czech teams in the UEFA Cup’s group round had different luck Nov. 8. Sparta Praha surprisingly won in Toulouse, France, 3–2. Meanwhile, Mladá Boleslav lost at home to Spain’s Villarreal 2–1.ATHLETE Javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková has been named the country’s “Athlete of the Year” by an annual poll of track-and-field experts. Špotáková won the World Championship in Osaka, Japan, in August and later also the World Cup final in Stuttgart, Germany. Decathlete Roman Šebrle, who also won a gold medal in Osaka, finished second, and pole vaulter Kateřina Baďurová was third.HOCKEY The national hockey team finished third in the Karjala tournament, which ended in Helsinki Nov. 11. The Czechs beat Finland 3–2, but lost to Sweden and Russia.TITLE Czech midfielder Radek Šírl’s goal in the Russian league’s final round Nov. 11 helped Zenit St. Petersburg win the league’s title. Šírl scored the only goal in Zenit’s 1–0 win over Ramenskoje. Zenit won the Russian league for only the second time in its history.INJURED The national soccer team’s goalkeeper Petr Čech suffered an injury that will prevent him from taking the field for more than a month. The Chelsea goalie tore his calf muscle in a Champions League game against Germany’s Schalke 04 Nov. 6.KORFBALL The national korfball team won a bronze medal at the World Championship in Brno. In the Nov. 10 game for third place, the Czechs beat Portugal 19–14. The Netherlands dominated the championship, winning its fourth consecutive title after beating Belgium 23–10. Korfball is similar to netball and features teams with four men and four women on each side.
