BIKER Biker Lukáš Pešek finished fifth in the last race of this season’s MotoGP series in Valencia, Spain, Nov. 4. Pešek finished fourth in the overall standings of the 125cc category. Throughout the season, Pešek won two MotoGP races and his fourth-place final ranking is the best finish by a Czech in MotoGP competition. Next season, Pešek moves up to the 250cc category.

SPEEDING The French police caught Milan Baroš, a member of the national soccer team, speeding on the highway between Geneva and Lyon Nov. 1. Baroš was driving his Ferrari at 271 kilometers per hour (168 mph), ignoring the speed limit of 130. The police seized Baroš’s driving license and car. Baroš, who plays with Olympique Lyon, will now face a court trial.
HOOLIGANS A group of hooligans broke into the AXA Arena, homefield of the Sparta Praha soccer team, and caused damage worth 20,000 Kč ($1,070) to the stadium’s facilities Nov. 3. In protest of Sparta’s recent poor play, the hooligans — all Sparta supporters — sprayed graffiti on the players’ bench. They also left a banner reading “Last warning” in the middle of the field. Sparta’s management has filed a criminal complaint against the unknown culprits.
TENNIS The men’s doubles team of Lukáš Dlouhý and Pavel Vízner has qualified for the prestigious Masters tournament, which features the world’s top eight doubles teams and kicks off in Shanghai, China, Nov. 11. Another Czech player in the tournament is Martin Damm, who teams up with India’s Leander Paes.
RUGBY The national rugby team continued its mediocre play in the European Championship’s top division. In their most recent game, the Czechs suffered a 46–0 rout in Spain. So far, the team has lost all of its six games in the six-member round-robin group. The country’s best rugby players, mostly based in foreign leagues, have boycotted the European Championship in protest of the national team’s management.
HINGIS Czech-born tennis star Martina Hingis caused an uproar Nov. 1 when she said she had tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon last summer. The 27-year-old, a former No. 1 player in the world, insisted that she had never taken any drugs. At the same time, she called an end to her tennis career.
CYCLING The Italian cycling team Liquigas, the Pro Tour’s second-ranked team, has extended its contract with the Czech cyclist Roman Kreuziger by three years. Kreuziger is regarded as the Czech Republic’s best cycling prospect.
FOOTBALL Quarterback Petr Boháčka’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Ondřej Hájek proved to be the clincher as the Prague Lions captured the Czech Junior League American football title, defeating Bratislava 19–14 Nov. 3. Fullback Jakub Musil opened scoring with a 2-yard run in the first quarter. From then, the Lions never relinquished the lead.
