Czechs see their bikes as fitness tools

Green Party politicians want to start public bike rental system

November 7th, 2007 issue

Most Czechs see bicycles as a recreational tool, not as a transportation device, industry leaders said at a bike conference at the recent Sport Life fair in Brno, Aktualne reported.

Only 15 percent of all Czech bikers pedal to school or to work, according to the Czech Bicycle Dealers Association. According to public opinion, bicycles are used mostly by poorer people – pensioners, workers or students, said Petr Kohoutek, chair of the trade group.

Czechs see bicycles as something they use in their leisure time,” Kohoutek told Aktualne.

Green Party politicians want to change that by starting a bike rental system, Aktualne reports.

Government-run bike rentals would help the popularity of biking in the country, the Greens say.
