Bright lights illuminate the room and palettes of color line the counters. An array of brushes is present, as are books and magazines for inspiration. An artist’s studio? Not quite, but pretty close, if one can consider a face a canvas and cosmetics the medium.
Surface Professional Makeup School opened last spring to offer women an opportunity to learn how to look their best.
“Our clients are women who want to improve themselves,” says Ronen Davidovich, co-owner of the school. “Some already have knowledge [about makeup] but want to improve.”
The school offers both professional and personal courses. For people who want to be makeup artists, Surface has a three-month class that earns you a certification. They also offer continuing education classes for people who are already make-up artists but would like to move into a different field, like fashion, film or stage make-up. Three personal classes present women with the chance to learn some new tricks.
“We have makeup consulting, a three-day personal course as well as VIP consulting,” Davidovich says. “Here, we teach you how to use, in the best way, what you already have at home.”
The makeup consulting course, which costs 1,700 Kč ($90) is a two-hour private lesson with a makeup artist. It’s completely personal. Zou and the consultant will look at your hair, skin, coloring and face shape and choose the best cosmetic look for you. For those interested in a bit more intensive counseling, book the five-to-six-hour VIP consulting option for 5,500 Kč. Surface also offers a three-day group class for 7,800 Kč.
“This is for those wanting in-depth information,” says Davidovich. “The maximum class size is six people, and we discuss everything from skincare to face shape. All for you personally.”
Most of Surface’s classes are held at their Prague 2 location, but they are a mobile operation. They often do mini-consulting classes for companies and other outside activities. You can even book a makeup artist (or two) to come to your home for a girly get-together of spoiling. With the holidays coming, Surface offers gift certificates as well, which make nice stocking stuffers.
“It’s the perfect gift,” Davidovich says. “It stays with you forever.”
Miss Czech Republic 2004, Jana Doležalová, is the “face” of Surface, as well as one of their graduates.
“It’s very important for me to look good in my job,” she says. “I received information on how to apply makeup, what kinds are good, which colors are good for my type, as well as seasonal makeup and different looks for day and night.”
Little things like how much and what makeup to wear when is an important part of the training.
“Many people don’t know the difference and wear the same makeup for all occasions,” Davidovich says.
“Every woman wants to look nice, but every woman has different needs,” adds Doležalová. “For business, personal, special occasions, etc. You also learn how to apply makeup for special effects, like strong lips or smoky eyes.”
“Sometimes a small change makes all the difference,” Davidovich says. “And you aren’t aware of it until a professional shows you.”
So treat yourself, or your mom, sister, or best friend to a fresh new look for winter, the upcoming holiday season and beyond.
