NHL The effort to bring the opening game of the NHL season to Prague next year could be complicated by a similar push made by hockey officials in Stockholm. “Now, it’s not merely about reaching an agreement with the NHL, but also about beating the opponent,” said spokesman Karel Tejkal of the Česká sportovní agency. Earlier this month, the agency announced it would like to host the New York Rangers next year at Sazka Arena.NEDVĚD Veteran hockey forward Petr Nedvěd could make his debut on the national team in the Euro Hockey Tour series this season, head coach Alois Hadamczik said. The 35-year-old, who spent most of his career in the NHL and joined Sparta Praha this season, has played in the past for Canada, even helping the country’s hockey team win the 1994 Winter Olympics. COACH The general manager of the national soccer team, Vlastimil Košťál, said that head coach Karel Brückner is likely to leave his post after the Euro 2008 finals next summer. Brückner has been leading the team since 2002. BASEBALL The national baseball team is also searching for a head coach. The new coach will have to fill the cleats of Arnošt Nesňal, manager of Extraliga champion Draci Brno. RUGBY The Tatra Smíchov rugby team won the inaugural Komerční banka Cup after beating Říčany, 23–8, Oct. 27. The cup was the most prestigious rugby match in the country this fall.YACHTING Czech sailor David Křížek finished third in the treacherous MiniTransat competition, in which sailors race solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Křížek started the competition in La Rochelle, France, and finished in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, after 26 days, 18 hours and 15 minutes. The winner of the race, France’s Herve Piveteau, arrived about 14 hours ahead of Křížek.BIRTHDAY The oldest living Czech Olympic champion, canoeist František Čapek, celebrated his 93rd birthday Oct. 24. Čapek won the 10-kilometer canoeing race at the 1948 Olympics in London.SPEEDWAY After three years away, biker Lukáš Dryml will make a comeback to the Speedway Grand Prix series next year. Dryml is among three motorcyclists who qualified for the series; he will compete against the top eight bikers from this season.LIONS The Prague Lions will face Bratislava in the championship game of the Czech Junior American Football League Saturday, Nov. 3. Bratislava finished the junior season undefeated, while Prague slipped into the title game after a controversial 2–0 win over Havířov. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at the Charles University athletic field in Hostivař.IRONMAN Triathlete Petr Vabroušek was the highest-ranked Czech in this year’s annual Ironman race in Hawaii Oct. 13. He finished in 54th place.
