Canada has lifted its visa restrictions for Czech nationals.
Citizens who want to visit Canada for less than 90 days will no longer need a temporary resident visa. Canada's minister of citizenship and immigration made the announcement Wednesday.
“We are confident that visa-free travel to Canada will be conducive to a further advancement of the business relations between the two countries,” said Alexandra Brabcová, executive director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic.
The move comes as the European Commission threatened retaliatory measures if Canada did not lift requirements on eight new EU member nations, including the Czech Republic, by Dec. 31.
Canada and the Czech Republic previously mutually abolished visas in October 1996. In 1997, Canada re-imposed the visa restrictions in response to a rising number of Romany people seeking asylum.
