SOCCER The national soccer team advanced to next summer’s Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland, defeating Germany 3-0 in Munich Oct. 17. Midfielder Libor Sionko opened the scoring in the first minute and the Czechs controlled most of the game. Midfielders Marek Matějovský and Jaroslav Plašil added the game’s other goals.

BOXING Lukáš Konečný will become the first Czech boxer ever to fight for the title of world champion Nov. 30. Konečný will take on Sergei Dzindziruk, the reigning champion of the World Boxing Organization’s super welterweight category, in Karlsruhe, Germany. Konečný is the Czech Republic’s most successful professional boxer, so far tallying 35 wins and only two losses. Meanwhile, Dzindziruk is undefeated in all of his 34 professional bouts.
MOTO Biker Lukáš Pešek finished sixth in the 125cc category of a MotoGP race in Sepang, Malaysia, Oct. 21. The low finish will likely cost Pešek a place on the winner’s podium in the league’s overall standings, as he now trails third place by 15 points in advance of the season’s last race in Valencia, Spain, Nov. 4. Throughout the season, Pešek was hoping to become the first Czech to ever place in the MotoGP’s overall winner’s circle.
GOLDEN National soccer team goalie Petr Čech is among 50 candidates to win the prestigious Golden Ball Trophy. Čech, who plays with England’s Chelsea, is the only Czech player shortlisted in the annual poll of experts held by the magazine France Football. For the first time ever, the list of candidates includes players based all over the world, not only in European leagues.
OLYMPICS The Pražská olympijská company, which is developing Prague’s candidacy to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, has asked for an additional 30 million Kč ($1.6 million) subsidy from the state to finance various studies and development projects related to the Olympics. So far, the company has already received 15 million Kč, which will be spent by the end of this year.
LEGEND Swedish tennis legend Björn Borg could make an appearance on a Czech court next May at the annual Prague Open tournament in the Štvanice Tennis Center. The tournament’s director, Vladislav Šavrda, said that the organizers were expecting to hear from Borg’s managers on his conditions to appear. Other candidates to play in an exibition match are Australia’s Pat Cash or Germany’s Michael Stich.
SQUASH The Czech Republic’s No. 1 squash player, Jan Koukal, has won a Professional Squash Association (PSA) tournament in Winnipeg, Canada. In the final match Oct. 15, Koukal beat Robin Clarke, 3-1. It was Koukal’s first PSA triumph outside the Czech Republic.
