NHL The NHL is planning to open its 2008–09 season in Prague, according to sources cited in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Sept. 30. The series would likely last two games and could feature the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Sources said details still needed to be ironed out before an official announcement.THAILAND Tomáš Berdych advanced to the semifinals of the Thailand Open tennis tournament before being stunned by unranked Benjamin Becker of Germany, who beat the Czech star 36, 64, 64 Sept. 29. Berdych is ranked No. 10 in the world. Becker went on to lose in the final to Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov.A1GP The young driver Erik Janiš has taken over for Tomáš Enge as the Czech Republic’s lead driver in the A1 Grand Prix, which had its first race of the season Sept. 30 at the Dutch course at Zandvoort. However, visiting Olomouc won 32 in 10 innings. Olomouc wrapped up the Extraliga “playout” series in the second game, with Lukáš Veselý earning a 40 shutout victory. Prague’s Tegola Titans now must play in a relegation series starting Oct. 13.SLAVIA After a 71 win over FC Zlín in the Extraliga Sept. 28, the soccer team Slavia Praha left for Spain to take on Sevilla FC in their second match of this year’s Champions League. Slavia, the Extraliga’s current leader, won its first match in Europe’s most prestigious club competition, while Sevilla has suffered recent defeats both in Spanish and European play. The game took place Oct. 2.ROAD RUN Pascal Sarwat won the 111th annual road run from Běchovice to Prague Sept. 30. The 19-year-old Tanzanian runner covered the race’s 10 kilometers in 31 minutes and 1 second. Jan Kreisinger placed second, securing the title of Czech road run champion. Petra Kamínková was again the fastest woman with her ninth consecutive victory.HANDBALL The Czech handball champion Baník Karviná lost its opening match of the Champions League Sept. 29. The Spanish favorite FC Barcelona beat Karviná by a decisive margin, 3520. Karviná’s next match in the competition is scheduled for Oct. 7, when it will play the French club US Ivry.PURCHASE The city of Most, north Bohemia, decided to acquire a majority share of the local soccer club SIAD Most Sept. 27, according to the news server iDnes. The city will buy all the stakes held by the company SIAD Czech, the club’s present majority owner, for 5.5 million Kč ($281,000). The firm is selling the club due to the continuing racist behavior taking place in Czech soccer stadiums, it said.
