EU visasI read Ms. Ashton’s report (“EU issues Canada visa warning,” News, Sept. 26–Oct. 2) with some interest. However, Mr. Abbing is politically and legally incorrect in his assertion that the European Union will press this issue of reciprocity to the extent that the 27 countries will demand visas from Canadians. It is also highly unlikely that the citizens of France, Germany or the United Kingdom will support a policy that suddenly requires them to apply for a Canadian visa. This has not been required for decades. Mr. Abbing’s extraordinary statements, if reported correctly, suggest that he speaks for himself and not the European Union.Thomas TassBudapest Fare rulesWhy doesn’t City Hall limit the amount of money taxi drivers can charge (“Court rules in favor of taxi drivers’ right to hike fares,” News, Sept. 26–Oct. 2) and force them to standardize their cars like officials do in Germany? For one, most of us don’t find paying 400 Kč ($20.50) for a ride in a 15-year-old hunker that smells of vomit a very attractive option. Secondly, if there were fewer taxis on the road, drivers wouldn’t feel obliged to gouge customers. It also wouldn’t hurt if City Hall would stop making issuing taxi licenses such a relatively easy affair. AAA is a great example to other taxi companies. They have started with standardizing all their airport cars, and they should continue to do so with their city cars. Most drivers pay AAA a fee to be on their dispatch grid, but at least the company expects a certain standard from the drivers and their cars. And gouging is strictly not allowed. The city should be using them as an example. Sanan PhutrakulPragueRespect GrimaudIt is unthinkable that such a highly respected pianist as Helene Grimaud, whose grace and honor raised the profile of classical music all around the world, could be besmirched by a person who represents a cultural institution that is gaining prominence from the presence of such great artists as Valery Gergiev and Ms. Grimaud, among many others (“On the rocks,” Around Town, Tempo, Sept. 26–Oct. 2). Where are the checks and balances? Where is accountability? Sept. 15 was indeed a sad day! Dennis ChengBrooklin, OntarioClimate trainThe climate change debate train has now left the station. … No matter which side you take, it has started a paradigm shift in our approach to energy use toward a sustainable and more secure energy model (“U.S. group spotlights Klaus,” News, Sept. 19–25). Indeed a long and challenging process, but a necessary one.Peter NovotnyPrague
