DAVIS The Czech Republic beat the Swiss team, led by Roger Federer, in Davis Cup play Sept. 21–23, relegating Switzerland to the tennis tournament’s lower group for the first time since 1994. Federer won both his singles matches against Tomáš Berdych and Radek Štěpánek, while Swiss countryman Stanilas Wawrinka lost both his matches against the duo. Berdych and Štěpánek also triumphed against a doubles team that included Federer and Yves Allegro.

WIN Slavia Praha beat Romania’s Steaua Bucharest, 2-1, in the opening round of the Champions League soccer tournament in Prague, Sept. 19. In its four-member round robin group, Slavia will also take on England’s Arsenal and Spain’s FC Sevilla. The top two teams will advance to further rounds.
UEFA The two Czech soccer teams in the UEFA Cup had poor initial results in the tourney’s qualification round. Sparta Praha tied with Denmark’s Odense, 0-0, Sept. 20 in Prague. On the same day, Mladá Boleslav lost its home game to Italy’s US Palermo, 1-0, after the Italians scored in the game’s final minute. Return legs are scheduled to take place Oct. 4. The winners will advance to the UEFA Cup’s group phase.
DUKLA Defense Minister Vlasta Parkanová has said severing ties between the Army and the sports organization Dukla is not on the Cabinet’s agenda. Previously, Parkanová had said that the Army should sever ties with the club to save money. However, Parkanová said Sept. 18 that the earlier statement only expressed her private opinion and that she would not pursue the split in the Cabinet.
WRESTLING Wrestler Marek Švec won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman 96-kg category at the world championship in Baku, Azerbaijan. Švec lost his first bout in the event against eventual champion Ramaz Nozadze of Georgia, but Švec then went on to beat his remaining four opponents. By winning the bronze, Švec also qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
PROTEST Mayors representing small towns are protesting Prague’s bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The mayors signed a petition stating that the government’s financial support of the bid will lead to further deterioration of small towns in the country.
TOURING Maserati’s Christian Montanari and Miquel Ramos earned a hard-fought victory at a World Touring Car Championship race held in Brno Sept. 23, their first on the FIA GT circuit. The pair finished 17 seconds ahead of the Aston Martin piloted by Kurt Wendlinger and Scott Sharp. The GT2 category saw another one-two for AF Corse Motorola Ferrari, with Dirk Muller and Toni Vilander taking the win, followed by teammates Gianmaria Bruni and Stephane Ortelli.
