Playoff series tied up

Krč takes one from Brno on the road

They careened through the regular season like it was a rollercoaster ride, so it seems somehow fitting that Krč Altron’s players would treat the opening weekend of playoff action in the same manner.
The boys in green jumped on MZLU Brno ace Leoš Kubát in the first inning of their semifinal series opener Sept. 22, scoring two quick runs. A moment later, after an unexpected twist and sudden plunge, MZLU chased Krč starter Jakub Jonák and held a 5–2 lead.
From there, the game jerked along, with Krč constantly threatening to explode before suddenly changing course. Budding star Matěj Hejma, veteran Jan Homolka and standout slugger Michal Müller combined for five hits. Each time they reached scoring position, however, a base running blunder or feeble popup would spoil the rally. MZLU, playing at home, took the opener 7–3.
The next afternoon, Krč evened the series with a 9–3 win, but not without a few scary moments — blowing an early lead and allowing two unearned runs.
Down 3–1 in the sixth, Krč’s Miroslav Kolář drew a walk and MZLU starter Vojtěch Jelínek plunked Müller with a pitch, prompting a pitching change. Reliever Pavel Jozek threw a wild pitch, allowing both runners to advance. Then Kolář crossed the plate on an infield error and Homolka knotted things with an RBI grounder.
Krč scored two more in the sixth frame and never looked back. Homolka earned a complete game victory, continuing his strong late season form and solid work in international play.
The series moves to Prague this weekend with games at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, and 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Krč’s stadium in Prague 4.
In the relegation series, or “playouts,” in ballplayer vernacular, Prague’s Tegola Titans managed to split their first two games at Olomouc, dropping their Sept. 22 contest 8–5 before storming back the next day — a 9–8 come-from-behind win in extra innings.
After working almost all the way back from a 7–2 deficit, Tegola evened things in the ninth when Jakub Sládek doubled and Jakub Doskočil followed with an RBI single. In the 12th, Pavel Míka reached first on a seeing-eye grounder and Doskočil kept things alive, slapping a base hit to right. Petr Šusta bunted both runners into scoring position before Aleš Posselt knocked a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Míka with what turned out to be the game winner.
The series continues Sept. 28–29 in Prague 12–Kamýk. Both games start at 2 p.m.
In other semifinal action, Draci Brno swept both games at home against Ostrava, as expected, 7–3 and 5–3. Lowly Black Hill Blansko surprised Technika Brno 1–0 Saturday before succumbing the next day 8–2.
