COURT The Prague 8 District Court has rejected the appeal of HC Vsetín to halt the start of the country’s Extraliga hockey league. Vsetín was dropped from the competition due to repeated financial woes and a failure to pay financial guarantees for this season. Ironically, the court refused to deal with the issue because the hockey club did not pay a 50,000 Kč ($2,520) court deposit. The Extraliga kicked off Sept. 13.
CONTROVERSY Kateřina Neumannová, former skiing champion and now president of the 2009 Liberec World Championship organizing commitee, said she may hire foreign managers to help her prepare the championship. Neumannová was appointed to lead the committee this summer after the previous head, Roman Kumpošt, was dimissed due to an alleged suspicious financial deal. Kumpošt argued against the decision and most of his management team resigned in protest.

FORFEITED The International Baseball Federation has stripped the national baseball team of its two victories this month in the European Championships after it determined that three players violated a contract between the IBAF and Major League Baseball. The Czech squad had defeated Croatia and Austria, losing four other games. Both wins now go into the record book as forfeits.
