QUALIFIER The national soccer team beat underdog San Marino 3–0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Serravalle, Sept. 8. Striker Jan Koller scored his 50th goal for the team in the game. The Czechs are next scheduled to take on Ireland Sept. 12 in Prague. A win in that match would significantly boost the country’s chance to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals next summer.TENNIS The Czech tennis team of Pavel Vízner and Lukáš Dlouhý lost to Julian Knowle of Austria and Simon Aspelin of Sweden 7–5, 6–4 in the men’s doubles finals at the U.S. Open in New York City Sept. 8. It was the second loss of the duo in a Grand Slam final this season, after losing the French Open final in June.HEIL, SPARTA Sparta Praha captain Pavel Horváth was fined 200,000 Kč ($9,800) by the Czech Soccer Association for his controversial gestures toward Sparta fans in a Gambrinus liga game in Prague–Žižkov this August. Horváth approached Sparta’s fans in the stands and twice raised his hand in a gesture reminiscent of the Nazi salute. Horváth called the incident unfortunate and insisted he did not intend a controversial gesture.CHANNEL Swimmer Yvetta Hlaváčová failed to beat the best-ever time for crossing the English Channel from Dover to Calais. Hlaváčová completed the swim in 7 hours 53 minutes, trailing her personal best, set last summer, by 28 minutes. Bulgaria’s Petar Stojčev recently set a new record for crossing the channel in August, at 6:57.50 hours.RUN Kenya’s Wilfred Kipkoech Taragon and his female compatriot Ireen Kwambai Kipchumba dominated the 12th Mattoni Grand Prix run, organized by the Prague International Marathon in Prague Sept. 8. Taragon won the men’s 10k race and Kwambai the women’s 5k run. For the first time, the grand prix was staged at night, under artificial lights.OLYMPICS Prague Mayor Pavel Bém and Czech Olympic Committee Chairman Milan Jirásek signed Sept. 4 an official bid for Prague to host the Summer Olympics in 2016. The other cities that have submitted bids for the 2016 games are Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Madrid, Baku and Dauhá.CHAMPION Track-and-field legend Merlene Ottey has made her first appearance on a track in the Czech Republic. The 47-year-old Jamaican, who now lives and competes in Slovenia, boosted ACP Brno in the Czech Extraliga final in Sušice, west Bohemia, Sept. 8. Ottey finished second in the women’s 100-meter sprint. In the past, she has won eight medals at the Olympics and 14 medals at the world championships.
