GOLDEN Roman Šebrle won the gold medal in decathlon at the track and field world championships in Osaka, Japan, Sept. 1, cementing his title as the world’s best all-around athlete. It was the first outdoor championship win for Šebrle, who holds the world record and Olympic gold. SPEARED Javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková also won gold at Osaka with a throw of 67.07 meters, beating favorite Christina Obergföll of Germany, who placed second. Špotáková is the first Czech woman to ever win a medal in the javelin at the world championships.SAVED For the second time in three years, Petr Čech has been named the best goalkeeper in Europe, according to UEFA. Čech currently plays for Chelsea in England’s Premier League. The award caps a year that saw Čech stage a remarkable recovery from a life-threatening head injury, leading Chelsea on to win the FA Cup.TIEBREAK Krč Altron was credited with third place in the upcoming baseball playoffs despite dropping a tight game to Arrows Ostrava 4–3 in their season finale. The two teams ended with identical 17–11 records and split four face-to-face meetings, with Altron earning the third seed based on run differential. Ostrava must now play Draci Brno in the playoffs while Krč plays MZLU Brno.
