DRAW The English soccer powerhouse Arsenal will arrive in Prague to battle the champion of the Gambrinus liga for the third preliminary round of the Champions League. Arsenal will play Sparta Praha Aug. 14 or Aug. 15, with a return leg played in London two weeks later. The captain of the Czech national team, Tomáš Rosický, who played for Sparta in the past, is expected to play for Arsenal, his current club.SLAVIA The Gambrinus liga runner-up Slavia Praha played to a 0–0 draw with Slovakia’s soccer champion, Žilina, in a preliminary round game for the Champions League in Slovakia Aug. 2. Slavia is scheduled to take on Žilina at home Aug. 8. The winner of the contest will then take on the Dutch team Ajax Amsterdam for the right to advance to the competition’s group phase.DEMAND Some of the Czech Under-20 players who advanced to the Under-20 World Cup final in Canada this July have drawn the interest of clubs from Western Europe. In the first completed deal, goalkeeper Radek Petr has agreed to move from Baník Ostrava to AC Parma of the Italian Serie A league. Petr, who has never played a match in the Gambrinus liga, signed a four-year contract with the Italians.COMEBACK Once one of the foremost Czech soccer clubs, Dukla Praha has made its return to professional soccer after 10 years in the wild. In its first game in the second division, Dukla lost to Opava 2–1 Aug. 4. Dukla’s fall from professional soccer dates back to the early 1990s, when the military severed ties with the club and the team was virtually cut off from financial support.TENNIS The No. 1 Czech female tennis player, Nicole Vaidišová, has returned to the courts after a month struggling with mononucleosis. The world’s No. 11 player came down with the virus soon after losing to Serbia’s Anna Ivanović in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in early July. Vaidišová said she intends to appear at the U.S. Open, which kicks off in New York in late August.APPOINTMENT Marek Rejman has been named executive director of the organizing committee of the 2009 World Nordic Ski Championship, which will take place in Liberec, north Bohemia. Rejman also manages freestyle skiers Tomáš Kraus and Nikola Sudová and is co-owner of the marketing agency GSMA. Rejman’s appointment came only days after retired ski champion Kateřina Neumannová replaced Roman Kumpošt as president of the organizing committee. HOCKEY The telecom company Telefónica O2 — the main sponsor of the country’s top division Extraliga hockey league — will launch live hockey broadcasting via its online O2TV digital television. It will be the first time Extraliga play will be available on digital TV.
