ČR, EU agree on funding26.3 billion euros expected over seven yearsBy Paul Voosen Staff Writer, The Prague Post August 1st, 2007 issue Taking a first, delayed step toward securing the Czech Republic’s European Union funding from 2007 to 2013, the country received formal approval July 27 of its plan to invest 26.3 billion euros ($36 billion/740 billion Kč) in initiatives across the country.Regional Development Minister Jiří Čunek received the approval during his recent visit to Brussels. Čunek had originally promised that structural funds from the EU would start entering the country by this June. However, as the country’s 17 operational programs for the funds each await individual approval, it is unlikely that any EU money will be available until the fall, when the first plans will likely be approved.Vladimír Špidla, the EU’s commissioner for employment and social affairs, joined Čunek in announcing the agreement. Some of the first funding will likely come from the European Social Fund, which supports science, research and employment programs and falls under Špidla’s portfolio.“The Czech strategy shows a strong commitment to promoting better investment in human resources, and this will yield more jobs, better jobs,” Špidla said. The country was among the laggards of the EU in having its plan approved — 19 countries finished first. Čunek blamed the delay on the previous government and the stalemate that followed the 2006 election.Among the priorities flagged by the government in its framework: boosting competitiveness by increasing investment in R&D and promoting tourism in the regions, developing a modern education system that will drive a more flexible work force, improving the country’s environment, and balancing development between cities and rural regions.Paul Voosen can be reached at pvoosen@praguepost.com Paul Voosen can be reached at pvoosen@praguepost.com Other articles in Business (1/08/2007):
