RACING Tomáš Enge has been dismissed from the American Le Mans series after a collision with race leader Mika Salo in a competition in Ohio July 22. The Czech driver was on probation following a collision with competitors in a previous race. Dale White, the manager of Enge’s Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning team, said the dismissal was in line with team policies and that management would not tolerate any further penalties from Enge.TENNIS Radek Štěpánek notched his second career victory on the ATP Tour after triumphing in Los Angeles July 22. In the final, the 28-year-old Czech beat American James Blake 7–6, 5–7, 6–2.K2 Mountaineer Libor Uher became the second Czech ever to scale the 8,611-meter-high peak of K2, located on the Pakistani side of the Himalayas. K2 is the world’s second-highest mountain after Mount Everest and is considered the world’s most grueling mountain to climb. The first Czech to scale the mountain was Josef Rakoncaj, in 1983.BASEBALL Youngsters of the Czech national team won the 2007 European Cadet Championship (ages 13–15) with a 7–3 victory over the Netherlands July 21. Arnošt Dubový hit .412 for the tournament, driving in seven runs, while pitcher Jan Tomek earned three wins. Russia defeated Austria for third place. The tournament was held in Jablonec and Liberec.SUPPORT Škoda Auto is reconsidering its support for the world’s most prestigious cycling race, the Tour de France, company spokesman Jaroslav Černý said July 20. Škoda has been the race’s official car since 2004. Speculation about Škoda’s withdrawal began after repeated doping scandals caused two large German TV stations to stop broadcasting the event, lowering the race’s marketing appeal. Škoda’s contract with the tour expires in 2008. UPSET The Czech women’s lacrosse team upset the favored U.S. team, AIST White, 12–11, in the final game of the Prague Cup July 17. It was the first-ever win of a Czech team over a U.S. squad in lacrosse.OLYMPICS The Czech Olympic Committee (ČOV) has again confirmed that it will bid to host the 2016 Summer Games in Prague. ČOV Vice Chairman Jiří Zedníček released the statement this month after the International Olympic Committee Chairman Jacques Rogge failed to mention Prague as a candidate city at a recent IOC meeting in Guatemala.RANKING The national soccer team has fallen from the top 10 monthly rankings of FIFA, soccer’s world governing body. The Czechs were ranked 11th in mid-July. It was the first time in three years that the national team was not ranked as one of the world’s top 10 teams. SPEEDWAY The world’s best speedway bikers will be seen in action in the Czech Grand Prix July 28 on the Markéta track in Prague 6–Břevnov. The biggest stars of the race will be this year’s Grand Prix leaders, Nicki Pedersen of Denmark and Australia’s Leigh Adams and Jason Crump.
