Havířov begs out of almost certain defeat by PanthersBy Dave Faries Staff Writer, The Prague Post July 11th, 2007 issue The winless Havířov Devils were no shows for Saturday’s road match-up against the undefeated Prague Panthers.Head coach Jaroslav Mrowiec asked to postpone the game at the last minute, claiming a rash of injuries left his team short-handed and unable to put enough bodies on the field. The Devils bumbled through the ČLAF season, losing by 40 points per game, on average. With just one free weekend before the playoffs begin and Havířov destined to battle B league champion Brno in a “relegation” match to determine whether they remain in the top division of Czech American football, a rescheduling date is in doubt.“They didn’t want to drive four hours to Prague to be beaten,” said Panthers assistant coach Dennis Youngberg. “They shouldn’t be in the upper division.”Such incidents continue to plague the league. The ČAAF, managing body for football in the Czech Republic, takes a hands-off approach, allowing weaker teams to finagle the rules. With the “postponement,” the Panthers gain an extra week of rest before the playoffs. But Prague coaches admit they’ve been rusty following time off.“It ruined our weekend, and it’s not good for the league,” Youngberg said.
