Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has a reputation as a laid-back do, where movie stars mix with moviegoers.
It is so easygoing, in fact, that this year, movie superstar Renee Zellweger strutted down the red carpet on opening night in the jeans and sunglasses she wore on the airplane after her luggage (and evening gowns and jewelry) failed to make a scheduled appearance in her hotel room, preferring instead to stay under wraps somewhere in the bowels of London’s Heathrow Airport.
But that didn’t stop Zellweger and the other international stars who joined her from shining brightly at the opening of the 42nd annual fete, which kicked off June 29 at Grand Hotel Pupp.
During the gala evening, Zellweger gave a Crystal Globe Award to Břetislav Pojar, a king of Czech animation.
Zellweger came to promote her new movie, Miss Potter, a biography of Beatrix Potter, author of popular children’s books at the turn of the century. The well-known Bridget Jones’ Diary actor has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the Potter performance.
Other stars expected to attend include director Peter Bogdanovich, actress Cybill Shepherd, actor Timothy Bottoms, director Hal Hartley, director Tom DiCillo, actress Romola Garai, actor Raz Degan, actress Ellen Page, director Eran Kolirin, director Jean Becker, actor Jean-Pierre Darroussin, actor Janos Bán, director Ferzan Ozpetek and scenarist and actor Zdeněk Svěrák.
More than 220 films are being shown at this year’s event, including a retrospective of Japanese New Wave films, a look back at the New Hollywood generation and a new section featuring key films from this year’s Cannes film festival. It wraps up July 7.
