WIMBLEDON Czech tennis players Tomáš Berdych and Nicole Vaidišová both advanced to their respective fourth rounds of men’s and women’s singles at Wimbledon. Berdych beat Korea’s Hyung-Taik Lee in straight sets July 2, and Vaidišová outplayed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, also in straight sets.CHAMPIONSHIP The national under-20 soccer team took off to an impressive start at the world championship in Canada. The young Czechs held defending champion Argentina to a nil-nil tie in the teams’ June 30 opening match. They are next scheduled to take on Panama July 3 and then head to North Korea for a July 6 game.RECORD Foremost long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia set two world records at the star-studded Golden Cleat track and field competition in Ostrava June 27. En route to clearing the record 21,285 meters in a one-hour run, Gebrselassie set a new world record in the 20-kilometer run when he cleared the distance in 56:25:98 minutes. SCANDAL National soccer team manager, Vlastimil Košťál, is involved in a scandal following a car accident he was involved in near Prague June 29. Košťál, who allegedly crashed into a car in front of him, was spotted and filmed by a TV crew drinking champagne at a birthday celebration in his honor only hours before the accident. Police failed to do an alcohol breath test at the spot of the accident, however. While Košťál denies he drank alcohol before driving, one police officer now faces sanctions for not performing the breath test.CLEARED National soccer team defender Marek Jankulovski, who plays with AC Milan in Italy, has been cleared of accusations that he placed illegal bets. Jankulovski was investigated in a case in which 21 players were suspected of placing bets worth 10.5 million euros in 1998–2008. The prosecutor also cleared 15 other players involved in the case.TRANSFER One of the best foreign players in the country’s top-flight soccer league, Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko, has moved from the Teplice team to Germany’s Wolfsburg. By selling Dzeko to the Bundesliga, Teplice hit a financial player jackpot. The team bought Dzeko for 75,000 euros two years ago and sold him for 4 million euros.DRAW A Czech-Slovak soccer derby is set in the Champions’ League second preliminary round in late July and early August as Slavia Praha takes on Slovak champion Žilina. The first game is scheduled for July 31 in Slovakia, with a return leg set for Prague one week later. The winner advances to the third preliminary round.UPCOMING GAMES In Extraliga baseball: July 6 MZLU Brno at Krc; July 8 Tegola at Ostrava. In CLAF American football: July 7 Havířov at Panthers; July 8 Bratislava at Lions.CANCELED The July 1 game between the Příbram Bobcats and Prague Lions at Pribram was canceled when only two referees showed up. The Czech Association of American Football (ČAAF) disciplinary committee will decide on further action. At press time, the game had not been rescheduled.
