Recent history

How sad that England had done more than the Czech Republic to remember this event (“Forgetting to remember,” News, June 27–July 3). It seems these young men are looked at as heroes in England. They are all Czechs and Slovaks, by the way. It’s an important event in the history of the Czech nation. Since it only happened 65 years ago, how embarrassing for the Czech government!

Modern art?
The city should stop wasting time and energy putting up ridiculous modern “art.” (“Art attack,” Tempo, June 27–July 3). Any moron can put random objects together and call it “art.” There is neither talent nor originality in any of this; it is not attractive in its own right and it certainly doesn’t work in an old city such as Prague. Perhaps the “artists” could exhibit their rubbish on an industrial estate where it can do no harm.

Going green
Jehan Salim-Harney’s report is very impressive (“Organic mechanics,” Tempo, Jan. 24–Jan. 30) Stanislav Miler, Vladimír Weiss and many other people are doing a great job, but they have to collect evidence from several years that green cars, running on pure veggie oil, can reach 300,000–400,000 kilometers in “run life” without collapsing the car engines. Other analyses of gas emissions, etc., would be helpful.
The problem in the near future is to convince the European Commission authorities to approve standardization and limitation of vegetable oils as a fuel.

Radar redux
It is refreshing to see there are at least a few sane voices in the Czech Republic who are willing to learn from past history. (“We’re in favor!” Opinion, June 20–June 26) Appeasement didn’t work in the 1930s, and it’s just as wrong-headed in the beginning of the 21st century. The reality is that being a free country brings both rights and responsibilities. If Europe is to remain free, it must learn from the past. The Czech Republic (and all of Europe) needs to cooperate and do its part to help the United States now instead of waiting until it’s too late.
There are worse things than having your oil turned off! Tell Putin to butt out!
