DRAFT Seventeen-year-old Czech hockey forward Jakub Voráček was the highest European draft pick in the annual National Hockey League Entry Draft, which took place in Columbus, Ohio, June 23. Voráček was picked seventh overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Altogether, four other Czechs were among this year’s 211 draftees — the lowest number since 1998.HARDBALL Baseball week in Prague runs through June 30. The tournament features national teams from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Australia and Sweden, along with the Czech under-19 squad. Also playing are teams from Prague, Moscow and Hope College from the United States. Games start at noon each day and run throughout, taking place at the national baseball center in Krč, Prague 4.DERBY The Czech horse Medeo, ridden by Irish jockey Paul Eddery, triumphed in the 87th Czech Derby held June 24 at the Prague–Velká Chuchle track. Medeo’s odds to win the race were 11:1.DENIED Former German soccer star and now coach Lothar Matthaus denied in an interview with Mladá fronta Dnes that the Czech Soccer Association (ČMFS) management had inquired if he would take over the national team from Karel Brückner. The rumor about the ČMFS eyeing Matthaus was circulated earlier this month by the sports magazine Totalsport.TRANSFER David Rozehnal, a defender on the national soccer team, has been transferred from the French club Paris St. Germain to Newcastle United of England’s Premiership. The 26-year-old signed a four-year contract worth 165 million Kč ($7.7 million).THREAT The spokesman of the Sparta Praha soccer club, Lukáš Přibyl, has received threats of physical assault from several radical Sparta fans. Those fans could not cope with a photograph that showed Přibyl dressed in a rival Bohemians 1905 jersey. Přibyl admitted he was a Bohemians fan but insisted it did not affect his work.BRIBE Roman Procházka, president of the second division Brno Bystrc soccer club, told the ČMFS’s disciplinary committee that the team’s captain, Zdeněk Houšť, had received an 80 million Kč bribe offer before a crucial match against Vitkovice in early June. Bystrc lost the game 4–2 despite being up 2–0 after the first half, and will be relegated from the division. Houšť denied Prochazka’s statement and called him a liar.
