Occupation?President Bush, and everybody who makes things happen for him, gives me the creeps. (“A strong pitch for the shield,” News, June 6–12)When I heard the news about the radar, I was physically sick, thinking how dare he even find the audacity to suggest anything to anybody after all the horrible things he’s done around the world, mostly on foreign soil. Very early on, he started to remind me of Hitler! Such arrogance! People like me, people who grew up in Czechoslovakia during the communist regime, people who had a chance to be part of the Velvet Revolution, people whose families lived through the first and second world wars, who grew up on watching real war footage, I can tell you with 100 percent certainty we can smell nacizmus (Nazism) and any kind of occupation miles away. Bush is, unfortunately, all of that! He is treating most of the world like Hitler did at the beginning of his rise to power. Who or what will stop Bush?! I hope we won’t let history repeat itself. Jitka DermisekVancouverAnything Mr. Bush suggests should be questioned. Mr. Bush has proven himself to lack the leadership qualities to be in a position to make recommendations about what could possibly be best for any one nation. Thames HolloKansas CityTraffic woesI not only got stuck in traffic yesterday but understand now how it is (“The myth of the selfish driver,” Opinion, June 6–12). I was mystified why more people don’t take public transport. Your article made the answer quite clear and the tax situation in business as well. I am no big conserver of energy and waste; I just try to do what is sensible and not try to make up for all the others who don’t. I’m older and noted a long time ago that I don’t need an environmental program to stop throwing trash out of my auto, dropping it on the street or wonder why we can’t reuse a lot of it. Particularly, I’ve been struck by our misuse of plastic for decades. If we were in earlier times, any one of those many containers would have served us far longer with a little washing. It doesn’t require a program to realize our self-conceit in the throwaway culture we live in.
