Tie-dying one on

A music fest for all ages and a few other random notes

Danny Bunyan (top right) and RPG — one of the acts playing Praguestock.
So it’s only one day, and promoters of the event don’t promise peace. Praguestock is all about music.
Well, music and beer.
The event, slated for June 9 on the deck at Občanská plovárna features eight expat bands, three lava grills, a few speedboats (for occasional joyrides up and down the Vltava) and one yacht.
Nothing says rock ’n’ roll like a big old luxury cruiser.
“The idea is to have a laugh in the sun and listen to live music,” says Danny Bunyan, organizer of the event and guitarist for RPG. With the exception of Replay, an established local cover band, all performing groups are made up of amateurs from the expat community — musicians from the United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, France and the Netherlands playing everything from Rage to Chili Peppers fusion to Zappa to acoustic jazz.
“It’s purely a close-knit thing for expats and the international schools here in Prague,” Bunyan explains. “Therefore, the day promises to be a belter.”
The musical menagerie kicks off at 4 p.m. with The Elder Light, followed by Absolute Zero, a collection of talented international-school students. Bunyan admits the kids outperform just about everyone else on the schedule — bad news for follow-up acts Simple Muffin, Zero King and Paradigm.
Bunyan’s own group, RPG (“the Foos, but way cooler”), steps onstage at 9:30, give or take a drink or two. Next is the Angus Wade Project, by day professional real estate developers. Replay steps in as the Jimi Hendrix of Praguestock, presumably finishing off — appropriately — with the national anthem “Where Is My Home?”
A mere 200 Kč ($9.50) gets you through the gates. For more information, contact Občanská plovárna at 257 531 451.
Ch-ch-changes
With guidebooks going to press, this one will upset a lot of editors: Sherlock’s Pub, a cocktail-beer joint featuring big screens, has just taken over the space on Bartolomějská in Old Town once occupied by Cafe Konvikt.
Just as quickly as they put it up, management at El Pueblo tore down the ill-advised patio built inside an odiferous passage on Ve Smečkách off Wenceslas Square. It took several weeks to complete, but came down in a matter of hours — just after mention of its existence appeared here.
La Bodega, the Spanish restaurant across from Masarykovo nádraží, has fitted out two more floors for service. That’s four levels, making it the largest tapas-paella–et al destination in Prague by about three.
Who put the bop?
Yes, it’s expensive and caters to the Cole Haan crowd (that is to say, the well-heeled). Still, you can’t fault Be Bop Bar for its creativity. This month, bartenders at the Radisson lounge are pouring cocktails based on fresh herbs and spices, as well as unique spirits. So if you have a good pair of loafers, a big line of credit and a desire for a saffron gimlet or shot of vodka distilled in New Zealand …
Final (slurred) words
Gotta regret missing this one: a party at Absinthe Time on Křemencova with performers from the musical Jack the Ripper (singing “I Could Have Slashed All Night,” “How do you kill a strumpet like Maria?” and other catchy tunes, I presume). Considering the bar’s rare (for Prague) selection of real absinthe, I’d guess understudies had the stage to themselves the next day.
