OLYMPICS The Czech Olympic Committee (ČOV) announced April 13 that the financial budget of the Czech contingent to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, is likely to be the biggest in Czech history. Costs will amount to at least 32 million Kč ($1.5 million), the ČOV said. Out of this sum, 26 million Kč will be paid from state coffers, while the rest will be covered by sponsors.

POLL Prague City Hall’s intention to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics is supported by 48 percent of the general population, according to recent public opinion research conducted by the Mori ČR agency in late March. Meanwhile, only 32 percent of Prague’s citizens supported hosting the games.
COACH Karel Brückner, head coach of the national soccer team, announced April 11 that he would continue guiding the Czech team in its Euro 2008 qualification bid. Brückner thought about resigning in late March after some of his team’s players, including team captain Tomáš Rosický, were seen by tabloid reporters admitting women believed to be prostitutes into their hotel room after a 2–1 loss to Germany.
AWARD Petr Čech, goalie of the Czech national soccer team, was named the player of the month for March in England’s Premier League. Čech, who plays for London-based Chelsea, did not allow a single goal in the month.
RUGBY The Czech national rugby team suffered its worst defeat in history April 7. Georgia shellacked the team, 98–3, in a European Championship division-one game in Tbilisi. The Czechs fell to last place in their six-member round-robin group.
GLOBETROTTER Cyclist Vítězslav Dostál arrived home in early April from a 26,200-kilometer (16,244-mile) ride that took him from Anchorage, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina. Dostál, who 10 years ago completed a cycling tour around the world, took eight months to pedal from Alaska to south Argentina.
VAULTER Arguably the world’s best female athlete, Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva will be the main box-office draw at the annual Golden Cleat track & field meet in Ostrava June 27. The event will be one of the most glamorous sporting events held in the country this year.
TENNIS Another champion athlete, world No. 1 tennis player Roger Federer, is set to lead the Swiss team in its Davis Cup match against the Czech Republic Sept. 21–23. The Czech team has yet to specify the venue of the match or the choice of surface.
COACH Czech soccer coach Milan Máčala has agreed to take over the sixth national team in his career. Two months after stepping down as Oman’s head coach, Máčala was hired to guide Bahrain April 7.
SLAVIA In other coaching news, Slavia Praha, one of the top soccer teams in the national Gambrinus liga, extended the contract of its head coach Karel Jarolím until 2010. Jarolím has guided Slavia to first place in the Gambrinus liga, as of mid-April.
