Colliers hires an athlete

Jelinek
Real estate powerhouse Colliers International has appointed Otto Jelinek, a well-known Czech athlete, as chairman of Colliers operations in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). As a world-champion figure skater in 1962, Jelinek became a popular sports figure and went on to have success in business and politics in Canada and the Czech Republic after returning in 1994. In addition to founding two companies, he was a key figure in the preparation, financing and staging of the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Most recently, Jelinek was chairman of Deloitte Central Europe and Czech Republic for nine years.

Plachá
CMS Cameron McKenna, one of the leading international law firms in the Czech Republic, has introduced a new managing partner at its Prague office, Iveta Plachá. Hilary McDowell, who held the position previously, has assumed responsibility as the European co-head of the CMS real estate practice. McDowell will continue to be based in Prague to support her clients on the Czech market and will focus on further real estate development across CEE.
Zídek
Plachá is the office’s first native Czech managing partner. She is a leading expert in real estate and property finance, with extensive experience advising domestic and international clients on major projects, large retail and office developments, construction, financing and leasing arrangements. She is also on the panel of arbitrators of the Czech Arbitration Chamber and is a member of the ICC national committee for international arbitration.
Plachá joined CMS Cameron McKenna in November 2003 from Weil, Gotshal & Manges v.o.s. and became a partner in September 2004. Plachá graduated from Charles University in Prague.
Pánek
Another major international law firm, White & Case, has also reported personnel changes as Aleš Zídek, Petr Pánek and Michal Smrek have been promoted to partners.
Zídek was named tax partner of the Prague office. He focuses on energy and telecommunications, private equity, international tax structuring, and reorganizations. Zídek is a statutory tax adviser and member of the Czech Chamber of Tax Advisers. He graduated from the University of West Bohemia with a master’s degree in cybernetics.
Smrek
Pánek’s primary focus is mergers, acquisitions, corporate and commercial legal matters, privatization projects, corporate reorganizations, public procurements and collective investments. He is qualified both in the Czech Republic and in New York, where the company is headquartered. He studied law at Charles University and obtained an LL.M. degree from Columbia Law School in New York City.
Smrek is an expert on private equity, mergers and acquisitions and telecommunications. His practice also involves intellectual property, IT and insurance. He is an advocate qualified in the Czech Republic and studied law and political science at Charles University.
