A continent of celluloid

The 14th annual European film fest is another film feast

By Steffen Silvis

January 24th, 2007 issue

What better way to impress a party of intelligent strangers than to hold forth on current trends in Romanian or Lithuanian cinema? For the next week and a half, you can get your official crash course on the state of the seventh art on the Continent with the 14th annual Days of European Films.

From Luxembourg to Latvia, the festival covers every corner and facet of modern European filmmaking. Even better, most of the films come with English subtitles. Below is a critic's choice of a few of the films on offer, all accessible to English speakers. For a full schedule, check the film listings in the Night and Day section.

12:08 East of Bucharest (A Fost Sau n-a Fost / 12:08 na východ of Bukurešti)—Romania. Corneliu Poruboiu, director. Mircea Andreescu, Teodor Corban and Ion Sapdaru star. Porumboiu is the rising star of Romanian cinema, and has already enjoyed accolades from Cannes. His latest film is a darkly comic look at the Romanian Revolution and the downfall of Ceausescu. Světozor, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.

Waiter (Ober / Číšník)—The Netherlands. Marc van Warmerdam, director. Alex van Warmerdam, Jaap Spijkers, Ariane Schluter and Pieere Bokma star. The Brothers van Warmerdam seem to make up a good percentage of Dutch films. Their latest is a very black comedy about a waiter whose life is falling into shreds. Světozor, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.; Aero, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m.

Days of European Films

Rent a Wife (Prete-moi ta main / Manželka z půjčovny)—France. Eric Lartigau, director. Alain Chabat, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Bernadette Lafont star. Lartigau's film was the biggest hit in French cinema last year, and Rent a Wife gained general applause as one of the best Gallic comedies to turn up in some time. Aero, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

Mother of Mine (Aideista Parhain)—Finland. Klaus Haro, director. Topi Majaniemi, Esko Salminen and Marjaana Maijala star. A tale of a completely different kindertransport, this one having occurred in World War II, when Finnish parents sent their children to neutral Sweden for safety. In Mother of Mine, a young lad is taken in by a family that doesn't necessarily want him. Aero, Feb. 1 at 9 p.m.; Světozor, Feb. 3 at 9 p.m.

Brides (Nyfes / Nevěsty)—Greece. In Greek, Russian and English. Pantelis Voulgaris, director. Damian Lewis, Victoria Haralambidou, Andrea Ferreol and Steven Berkoff star. Voulgaris' epic saga of Greek, Turkish and Russian women sailing to America in the 1920s as mail-order brides. Lewis (Band of Brothers and An Unfinished Life) plays an American photojournalist onboard the bride ship who falls for one of the women. Aero, Jan. 30 at 9 p.m.; Světozor, Feb. 2 at 9 p.m.

Bye Bye Blackbird (Sbohem, černý ptáku!)—Luxembourg and UK. In English. Robinson Savary, director. James Thiérrée, Derek Jacobi, Michael Lonsdale star. London, 1900: After the apparent accident of his friend and fellow bridge constructor, a young man joins the circus with even more tragic results. Světozor, Jan. 29 at 5 p.m.; Aero, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.

Seven Invisible Men (Septyni nematomi žmones / Sedm neviditelných lidí)—Lithuania. Šarunas Bartas, director. Denis Kirilov, Rita Klein, Igor Cyhankov and Dmitri Podnozov star. Bartas is gaining worldwide recognition as one of the freshest young, contemporary film directors. His latest is a road movie of characters moving over the grim landscape of the former Soviet Union. Aero, Jan. 29 at 9 p.m.; Světozor, Jan. 31 at 9 p.m.

Inside Paris (Dans Paris / V Paříži)—France. Christophe Honoré, director. Romain Duris, Louis Garrel, Guy Marchand and Marie-France Pisier star. Honoré is hailed as a true auteur among his countrymen, and he certainly has influenced that tag by both writing for Cahiers du cinéma and by forging a contemporary take on nouvelle vague filmmaking. Aero, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m.; Světozor, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m.
