Home Sweet Home stays true to its namePrague real estate firm targets expats looking to relocate, open business in the Golden CityBy Julie O'Shea Staff Writer, The Prague Post January 17th, 2007 issue
Dressed in a conservative argyle sweater during a recent interview in his cozy office on Vodičkova street, the 38-year-old entrepreneur seems far removed from that sort of chaotic lifestyle, but Ježek is quick to explain that his past is what has helped shape his future. "My heart beat for rock 'n' roll," Ježek says, fondly remembering his club-scene days. But "a man like me doesn't want to do one thing his whole life."
And so, in 2000, Ježek made a change, jumping head first into Prague's bustling real estate scene. "I wanted to continue doing what I was doing in the clubs," Ježek explains. "You have to learn how to lease. You have to learn how to manage people. It prepares you in a real nice way." But, instead of managing bands and leasing club space, Ježek now manages a firm of 25 employees and leases out short- and long-term flats, houses and offices for expats looking to visit or relocate to the Golden City. On paper, Home Sweet Home has only existed for about a year. However, Ježek likes to think of it as a continuation of something he started nearly seven years ago. "The 'new' is only the name," Ježek says. "We have a new name, but the same office." A year after moving to Prague from his native Olomouc in 1999, Ježek opened Happy House Rentals with the help of a likeminded business partner. The company, which catered to the English-speaking community, was a huge success, according to Ježek, who immediately started looking for ways to expand the profit. When his business partner left for the United States, there was talk of opening up a branch in the States to help adventure-seeking Americans find living accommodations overseas. But the partner returned to Prague a year later and shortly thereafter the duo decided to go their separate ways. Ježek got to keep the office; his partner walked away with the business name. While some might consider it a daunting task to build up a new reputation under a different name, Ježek wasn't deterred. "It is still the same person making this business," he says. "We have many clients from the past who contact me because my name is Aleš Ježek. ... They come to me because of my reputation." Ježek feels he has a lot more to offer people, both professionally and personally, now than he did when first starting out in the business. What's changed? "Life," is Ježek's simple answer. Laughing, he adds: "I'm older now." With age comes experience. "Now I feel ready to advise people," he says. Ježek has a four-pronged goal for Home Sweet Home: long-term and short-term housing rents, commercial leases and home sales. "I felt really strongly about expanding out into four divisions," Ježek says. "This is a fast-growing business I think we have grown up." Michaela Císařová, the company's leasing manager, explains that "clients usually like our visual presentation, professional photos or 3-D viewing, which gives them information in good quality and size." In addition, Ježek adds that his sterling reputation and extensive client list didn't just come from what he can physically offer his customers. When it comes right down to it, Ježek believes a lot of his success can be summed up with one word: trust. "Trusting is very important in the selling of properties," Ježek firmly states. "Very important." Císařová, who has worked with Ježek for two years, lauds her boss for his ability to bring together a "sympathetic and perceptive" team of people dedicated to helping expats find a place to call home. The casual, friendly office atmosphere hardly anyone wears a suit and tie "is subconsciously appreciated by clients," Císařová says, noting that "pleasant" and "easy" are just some of the adjectives used to describe visits to the real estate office. "Home Sweet Home means what we are," Ježek sums up, a small smile spreading over his face. After all, he adds, "we aren't a rock 'n' roll club." Naďa Černá contributed to this report.
