A new home for RFE/RL

After an exhaustive five-year search for a new home, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) broke ground last month at the site of its future broadcast headquarters in Prague 10. The Oct. 13 ceremony was a grand affair with Orco Property Group, the project's developer and investor, literally rolling out the red carpet for the dozens of primly dressed guests who came to show their support.

The new headquarters, designed by Cigler Marani Architects, will be anchored by a five-story, 23,545-square-meter (253,436-square-foot) main building with two ponds.

The two lead architects were on hand for the groundbreaking and admitted that this project was "complex," especially given all the government specifications that went into the design. Asked what exactly those might entail, Jakub Cigler replied with a wry smile: "They are secret, of course."

Construction on the new site is scheduled to last until 2008.

Local architects Jakub Cigler and Vincent Marani say the RFE/RL project was "complex."

RFE/RL looked at about 30 different sites before settling on the final location in an area known as Hagibor. It is moving for its current location on Vinohradská, across from the National Museum, due to security concerns following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. RFE/RL was seen as a target because of its pro-democracy message and ties to the U.S. Congress.
