And other tidbits from the Prague culinary circuit

September 20th, 2006 issue

Owner Sanjiv Suri greets media and marketing folks at the Bellevue-V Zátiší reopening.
Say hello again to Bellevue and V Zátiší. The restaurants reopened after being closed five weeks for some redecorating and menu revisions. Press materials emphasize the work of decorators Rony Plesl and Barbora Škorpilová, along with consulting chef Carlo Bernardini. Marketing types were a dominant presence at the reopening party, nearly outnumbering the press contingent. The marketeers raved about ... well, everything, but particularly the use of random surveys and blind tastings to determine such elements as the size of Bellevue's smoking section and the scope of both wine lists. At least the food (six courses) served to media attendees was pretty good.

Three rhymes with free

For three consecutive Saturday afternoons, the folks at Three Lions, a British-style pub on Krakovská street in Prague 1, poured Krušovice at 1 Kč a pop — a promotional gimmick akin to the infamous nickel-beer event one summer night years ago at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. New owners Mark Robertson and Mark O'Brien hope to lure expats to their New Town establishment, as well as gather names for an expat football league. But the former is the real problem. Many expats avoid tourist-heavy places. "This part of town is full of stag parties on weekends," admits manager Arnie Foley, "and no one wants to associate with them." Pubs bordering Wenceslas Square must find creative ways to build a regular following, hence the jedna koruna deal. The body count? "We've not done as many as we thought we'd do," O'Brien reported during the final Saturday. The pub sold 250 underpriced beers the first weekend and fewer the remaining two. But the owners pronounced themselves satisfied with the results. "It's been a very cheap way of getting people talking about us," O'Brien says. Unlike the disastrous night in Cleveland (during which fans stormed the field, causing the home team to forfeit the game), the only unusual incident occurring near Three Lions was unrelated. Bystanders noticed a bleary-eyed, kilted warrior climbing the statue of Wenceslas.

What's on tapas?

A brand-new Spanish bar and restaurant, La Bodega, opened on Hybernská, across from Masarykovo nádraží. No relation to the long-standing La Bodega Flamenca, although staff at the Bubeneč tapas bar told us, with some disdain, "We're aware of [that other place]."

Robbery for fun and profit

Two wait staff from a bar off Wenceslas Square dropped by the office one morning and encountered a female burglar intent on carting off a laptop and, um, a bag of oblong sex toys, presumably nicked from the porn shop nearby. Hours later, the intrepid waitresses were still pondering the crime. Where, they wondered, did the woman expect to sell all those dildos?

Final (slurred) words

Expat fave Fraktal bought 30 liters of good, homemade Moravian slivovice recently. The bar has less than one liter left, although for some reason no one can seem to remember where it all went.
