Microsoft starts academy at Czech Technical University

Program aims to help prepare students for careers in software

Software giant Microsoft is set to become the first company in the Czech Republic to start a training program based on the specific requests of university students interested in jobs with the company.

This month Microsoft and the Silicon Hill — the biggest student club at Czech Technical University (ČVUT) — will launch the "Microsoft IT Academy" on-campus in Prague 6–Strahov. The Academy will give students access to top technologies and educational programs, officials say.

Radovan Igliar, a representative of Silicon Hill, said the new academy at Strahov should help students get familiar with Microsoft applications not only from users' point of view, but also from the side of the actual software developers.

"A real IT professional can hardly get satisfied with knowing one or two systems — he should have at least a basic grasp of all IT fields. New Microsoft technologies appear to be ideal for further education of our club members," Igliar explained.

The main purpose of the academy is to bridge the gap between the academic field and the business field in which graduates will work in the future, officials say.

Dalibor Kačmář, manager of academic programs at Microsoft Czech Republic and Slovakia, said the academies follow Microsoft's worldwide commitment to supporting education.

"The Microsoft IT Academy project enables students to get in touch with modern technologies and also with experts who have strong background in this field," Kačmář pointed out. "The Strahov Microsoft IT Academy is unique by the fact that its launch was initiated by the students from Silicon Hill. The cooperation with those young experts is quite enjoyable for us."
