  • COMMEMORATION -
  • Dozens gathered for a ceremony in front of the Czech Radio building Aug. 21 to remember the 1968 invasion of Warsaw Pact armies that put an end to Prague Spring. Seventy-two people were killed during the Soviet occupation. Prague Mayor Pavel Bém said at the event that communist crimes should never be forgotten.

  • BETS -
  • Bookmakers at Tipsport have announced a bet on whether new Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek will form a functioning government by Oct. 31. Few people are willing to place a wager, though, because the outcome is too uncertain, writes Mladá fronta Dnes.

  • CONFISCATED -
  • Czech Retail Inspection (ČOI) confiscated 80 million Kč ($3.64 million) worth of counterfeit CDs, DVDs and clothing in an Aug. 19 raid in Hora Svatého Šebestiána, in the Chomutov district of north Bohemia. In the first six months of 2006, ČOI confiscated some 105 million Kč worth of merchandise, 92 million Kč of it in north Bohemia.

  • METRO -
  • Prague City Hall will not get any government funds for the construction of new metro stations this year, reports Mladá fronta Dnes. The new state budget, approved Aug. 15, does not set aside any money for this purpose. City officials are outraged, saying it's impossible for the city to finance projects of such scope.

  • PROTEST -
  • Dozens of people from the Klatovy district of west Bohemia protested Aug. 19 against a nuclear waste storage facility that could be built in Pačejov starting in 2009. Locals worry about the threat of radioactive contamination. The government selected five potential sites for the facility.
