Security boosted for flights to U.S.

High alert continues at Ruzyně Airport despite easing of threat levels

Security measures are easing at Prague Ruzyně International Airport, though it remains on high alert following an announcement from UK authorities that they had foiled a terrorist plot to blow up U.S.-bound flights leaving several UK airports with liquid bombs brought onboard planes.

Ruzyně officials say they have installed new explosive-detection devices to screen passenger luggage, though declined to say how many.

Passengers may still face heightened security, depending on their airline.

National carrier Czech Airlines (ČSA) continues to ban all liquids except baby formula and approved medications on flights to the United States. Passengers on U.S.-bound flights will also be subjected to more random searches, as well as extensive security screening of shoes, airport authorities say.

ČSA is now allowing liquids and gels on flights to the United Kingdom.

Although carry-on bags were banned soon after news broke of the terrorist plot Aug. 10, ČSA and other major European carriers are now allowing passengers on U.S.- and UK-bound flights to bring them on board again, along with electronic devices such as notebook computers.

Flying to the UK or U.S..

  • All major carriers ban carrying on gels and liquids
  • ČSA permits hand luggage and some electronic devices including laptops
  • Prague Ruzyně Airport recommends arriving three hours before flights
  • Veronika Sedláčková, spokeswoman for Ruzyně Airport, says it is up to each airline to decide what passengers can and cannot carry onboard.

ČSA spokeswoman Jana Víšková says, "We recommend that passengers arrive at the airport about two to three hours before departure."

Airports around the world ratcheted up security following the announcement that UK authorities had arrested more than 20 suspected terrorists in a complex plot that continues to unfold.

"Security and passport checks on flights to the United States and Britain became more thorough and stricter," Sedláčková says.

Flights to other European countries are reporting routine security.
