  • TRANSFERS -
  • Two star players on the Czech World Cup soccer team transferred to new clubs prior to the tournament's kickoff June 9. Midfielder Tomáš Rosický, who previously played for Borussia Dortmund of Germany, joined the English Premiership's Arsenal. Striker Jan Koller, who also played for Borussia, will now play for AS Monaco in France.

  • CRITICISM -
  • Czech-American tennis legend Martina Navrátilová received sharp criticism from Ivo Kaderka, president of the Czech Tennis Association, for her appearance-fee request during the ECM Open tournament in Prague May 8–14. Kaderka said Navrátilová, 49, requested 1 million Kč ($44,346) in advance, and that she only played for the money. The tournament was the first time the star had played on Czech courts in 12 years.

  • AWARD -
  • Petr Čech, FC Chelsea's star goalie, has won the Golden Ball trophy for the best Czech player of the 2005–06 season. Čech emerged victorious from the poll of soccer coaches and experts ahead of Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedvěd and Arsenal's Tomáš Rosický.

  • COACH -
  • Alois Hadamczik will be the Czech national hockey team's head coach for the next two seasons. Hadamczik led the teams to bronze medals at the Winter Olympics in Turin and then to silver medals at the World Championships in Latvia. Despite his successes, he received criticism during the Olympics for not being able to manage some of the star NHL players in the lineup.

  • RECOVERY -
  • The Bohemians, the Prague soccer team that withdrew from the professional league a year and a half ago after going bankrupt, will return to the second league next season. Nicknamed the Kangaroos, the Bohemians bought the second-division license from another Prague-based team, Xaverov.

  • CRISIS -
  • HC Vsetín is going through a financial crisis that could cost the south Moravian hockey team a spot in the top flight Extraliga competition. If Vsetín doesn't give the Association of Professional Clubs specific bank guarantees by the end of the month, it could be removed from the Extraliga.
