  • AWARD -
  • The Official Airline Guide has named Czech Airlines (ČSA) the best airline in Central and Eastern Europe, ČSA spokeswoman Jitka Novotná said May 21. The award is based on the results of a public vote. ČSA was also shortlisted for the best airline of 2006 award, which Pacific eventually won.

  • VODAFONE -
  • Grahame Maher, the new managing director of Vodafone ČR, recently said his main goal is to make sure Vodafone doesn't kill Oskar, which the former bought last year. He also said that fees could be reduced if the country's major mobile operators agreed on sharing of base stations and cost-sharing for mobile television.

  • MEDAL -
  • Czech brewery Pivovar Velké Popovice announced May 18 that its lager Velkopopovický Kozel Medium won a silver medal at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA). The AIBA included 969 samples from 31 countries in this year's contest. Samples were judged on taste, aroma, appearance, style and technical quality.

  • CARS -
  • Demand for mini cars has been growing here, while interest in standard-class cars is on the decline, according to data from the Car Importers Association. The number of the smallest passenger cars on the market grew 60 percent between January and April of this year, compared to 2005. The growth in demand for these cars is primarily due to their low price tags.

  • RESEARCH -
  • The state will spend more than 22.4 billion Kč ($1 billion) on research and development in 2007, or 0.67 percent of gross domestic product, Deputy Prime Minister for the Economy Jiří Havel said May 19, referring to a proposal by the government council for research and development. The Cabinet was set to discuss the proposal May 24.

  • RATES -
  • Czech National Bank Governor Zdeněk Tůma recently said there would likely be one interest rate hike this year. Interest rates are currently 2 percent. The bank last raised rates in October, increasing them a quarter point.

  • INVESTMENT -
  • Morgan Stanley, the third-largest U.S. investment bank, plans to invest more than 20 billion Kč in the Czech Republic through developer Multi Development, which it acquired a majority stake in earlier this year, Hospodářské noviny reported May 23. The investment, the paper noted, is close to the 28 billion Kč that South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai plans to spend building a new automotive plant here.

  • SHOPPING -
  • Thirteen new shopping centers will be built in the country by the end of 2007 to meet growing demand, according to a survey by consulting firm Cushman & Wakefield. This will put the country closer to the European Union average in terms of shopping centers per 1,000 people.

  • ADVERTISING -
  • Procter & Gamble Co. was the country's biggest advertiser last year, spending approximately 1.2 billion Kč, or 78 percent more than in 2004. The pharmaceutical company, which committed 93.1 percent of its advertising expenditures to television spots, was followed by mobile operators T-Mobile and Vodafone.
