CHAMPIONS - Sparta Praha hockey team defeated cross-town rival Slavia en route to the Extraliga title April 21. In the first ever meeting of the two Prague teams in the Extraliga finals, Sparta won the best-of-seven series 4–2.

OFFICIATING - Slavia Praha soccer team walked off the field in a Gambrinus liga game against Slovan Liberec April 26 in protest over the officiating. The team spent 20 minutes in the locker room before returning to the field. Slavia management decided to pull its team after the second of two players was ejected. The league's disciplinary committee is considering fining Slavia.

RECORD - Sparta Praha striker Mauro Lustrinelli, of Switzerland, scored the fastest goal in Gambrinus liga history April 24 when he netted a point in the first 11 seconds of play in a game against Jablonec. Sparta eventually won the game 3–0.

MONEY - Czech sports associations will take a financial hit from an April 27 decision in Parliament to uphold the value-added tax on lottery company Sazka. Sazka contributes around 700 million Kč ($30.6 million) a year to Czech sports, making it their largest sponsor. Imposing VAT on Sazka last year resulted in the company cutting sponsorship by 250 million Kč.

HOOLIGANS - In another April 27 ruling, Parliament approved a new Criminal Code that creates stronger punishment for soccer hooligans. From now on, hooligans who start fights at stadiums could face up to two years behind bars.

COACH - Richard Schallert of Austria has replaced Slovenia's Vasja Bajc as head coach of the Czech ski jumping team. Under Bajc, this year Jakub Janda became the first Czech ski jumper to win the World Cup. The Slovenian resigned in connection with a controversy over marketing rights between Janda and the Czech Skiing Union.

TENNIS - The Czech national women's tennis team will take on powerhouse France in the Fed Cup's playoff round in September. The Czech Republic qualified for the playoffs after beating Thailand 4–1 April 23.

HOCKEY - The Czech national hockey team will undergo a changing of the guard at the upcoming World Championships in Latvia May 5–21. Some longtime members — including Jaromír Jágr, Martin Straka and Martin Ručinský — recently announced they would no longer play on the national team.
