  • HOCKEY -
    • Prague cross-town hockey rivals Sparta and Slavia are competing in a best-of-seven Extraliga final between April 9 and 23. At press time, Sparta led the series. It is the first time that two Prague-based teams have faced off in the Extraliga finals.

  • CELTIC -
    • Sparta Praha defender Michal Kadlec has caught the eye of Scottish club Celtic Glasgow. Celtic's scout watched the 21-year-old in an April 8 cross-town derby game in which Sparta defeated Slavia 2–1. Celtic is reportedly ready to pay 500,000 pounds sterling ($875,600/20.7 million Kč) for the defender.

  • TENNIS -
    • The Czech men's Davis Cup tennis team will take on the Netherlands in the Davis Cup World Group playoffs in September. The Czech team advanced to the playoff round after comfortably beating Morocco 5–0 in a Euro–African Group match in Africa from April 7 to 9.

  • TRANSFER -
    • Dušan Salfický, the reserve goalie for the Czech Olympic ice hockey team, is going to be transferred from Russia's Chimik Voskresensk to Sparta Praha. Salfický is expected to replace 41-year-old veteran goalie Petr Bříza, who will end his playing career this season and become the team's general manager.

  • TURF -
    • Stadiums that host games in the top-division Gambrinus liga will have heated turf starting in the 2008–09 season, the Czech Soccer Association announced April 4. Today, only seven of the 16 Gambrinus liga stadiums have heated turf. Gambrinus liga Director Ivo Lubas said the heated turf should prevent some games from being postponed due to inclement weather, which was a problem this spring.

  • ADVERTISING -
    • Budvar's marketing campaign during the Olympic ice hockey tournament in Turin did not violate the Ethical Advertising Codex set by the Advertising Council (RPR), Pavel Kurýl, executive director of the RPR, announced April 10. The Czech Olympic Committee filed a complaint and a lawsuit with the Regional Court in České Budějovice against Budvar in mid-February, charging that the brewery misused Olympic symbols in its campaign. The court has not issued a ruling.

  • MESSAGE -
    • During a playoff series between Vsetín and Ústí nad Labem for the right to advance to ice hockey's top-division Extraliga next season, a player for Vsetín reportedly received a bribe offer to sabotage his team. Vsetín manager Oldřich Štefl said April 4 that one his players received a text message offering him a lucrative contract with Ústí nad Labem next season if he helped the north Bohemian squad defeat Vsetín in the series, a charge the police are now investigating. Vsetín won the series 4–2.
