OVERTURNED - The Chamber of Deputies voted in favor of registered partnerships for gay and lesbian couples March 15, overturning President Václav Klaus' veto from last month. The new bill, which will allow such couples some of the same rights afforded to married people, only passed through the Chamber of Deputies on a fifth attempt.

GERMANS - The remains of German Wehrmacht soldiers who died during World War II are being stored in some 4,000 cases in a factory hall in Ústí nad Labem. The remains, unearthed in the mid-1990s, were to be reburied in Prague, but a lack of finances halted the project. Local police are investigating the case.

PROTESTS - Two groups marched on the U.S. Embassy in Malá Strana March 19, a protest timed with the third anniversary of the war in Iraq. One demonstration originating at Prague Castle involved nearly 40 people, while the second, organized by the Communist Union of Youth, began its march from Wenceslas Square.

SPENDING - The Czech Republic trails most European countries in environmental protection spending, averaging 670 Kč ($28.13) per person per year, according to data from the European Union statistical office. Government spending accounts for only 45 percent of all expenditures on environmental protection here. The majority of it comes from individual companies and environmental groups.

BRIBERY - The Prague High State Attorney's Office will investigate a case of alleged bribery involving Freedom Union-DEU Deputy Zdeněk Kořistka. Marek Dalik, adviser to Civic Democrat leader Mirek Topolánek, and lobbyist Jan Večerek are accused of offering Kořistka 10 million Kč to help bring down former Prime Minister Stanislav Gross' government. Gross resigned a year ago.
