RoundupNews & notes | Search restaurants | Archives DEFEAT - Slavia Praha soccer team lost to US Palermo of Italy 1-0 in the Feb. 23 UEFA Cup game in Palermo, eliminating the Czech squad from the cup. Slavia defeated the Italians in Prague 21 a week earlier, but the one goal secured US Palermo a spot in the quarterfinals. Slavia was the last Czech team remaining in European competiton this season. POSTPONED - Bad weather in February delayed the start of the spring season, which kicked off Feb. 18, for six teams in the Gambrinus liga. Three matches Ostrava versus Most, Olomouc versus Plzeň and Blšany versus Mladá Boleslav have been postponed to late March. LEGO - Aleš Besta, a member of the Boby Brno soccer team, donated 30,000 Kč ($1,250) in Lego sets Feb. 21 to children in a Brno hospital. Besta was ordered to make the donation as a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct in a Gambrinus liga game in December. In that game, Besta used his hand to score a goal and then denied it. FAME - The Czech Soccer Association opened its first Hall of Fame Feb. 20. Trophies from the Czechoslovak soccer team's appearances in the World Cup finals in 1934 and 1962 are among the most significant exhibits. BETS - Betting house Fortuna is taking bets on how many red cards Sparta Praha soccer defender Tomáš Řepka will get in the upcoming season. Řepka, who returned to Sparta from the English FA Premier League during the winter break, is known for his physical play and controversial behavior on the pitch. Řepka did not, however, receive any red cards in his first game this season with Sparta against Liberec Feb. 18. TENNIS - Two Czech doubles teams celebrated their first wins in ATP tennis tournaments this season. Martin Damm and Radek Štěpánek took the top trophy in a tournament in Marseille, France, Feb. 19. On the same day, František Čermák and Leoš Friedl won a tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina. LEGEND - Czech-American tennis legend Martina Navrátilová confirmed during a visit to Prague in February that she will play in a WTA event in Prague in early May. Navrátilová will turn 50 in October. TELEVISION - Czech Television, a public station, will get exclusive broadcast rights for Gambrinus liga games next fall, following an agreement with the Czech Soccer Association. TV Nova has had the rights to the games for the past 12 years.
STRIKER - The FK Teplice soccer team, a part of the Gambrinus liga, has hired 19-year-old striker Ariel Colzer. He is on loan from the Boca Juniors club in Argentina. Victory - Radek Štěpánek won his first ATP tournament after demolishing Christoph Rochus of Belgium 6-0, 6-3 in the finals of a tournament in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Feb. 26. He is the first Czech to win a singles championship on the ATP Tour this year. FIGHTER - Nine-year-old Czech martial artist Petr Soukup won two silver medals at an international competition in Phoenix, Arizona, called "Battle of the Desert 2006" Feb. 17.
